Mare Breeding Services
The Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Diamond C Stables offers a full range of mare breeding services. For more complete details, please contact Branden Culver.
Mare breeding services include breeding with artificial insemination with fresh shipped-cooled semen. Mare breeding services are provided on an outpatient (trailer-in) or inpatient basis (mares housed at the Diamond C Stables). All services are charged on a per-procedure basis. In order to determine the optimal time of breeding, mares in heat are examined with transrectal palpation and ultrasonography as frequently as deemed necessary based on the method of breeding. Mares being bred by artificial insemination using fresh semen are generally examined every other day while they are in heat. Mares being bred using shipped-cooled semen are generally examined on a daily basis while they are in heat to predict the day of ovulation. After breeding, mares are examined for pregnancy 12 or 14 days after ovulation or as deemed necessary by ultrasonography findings.
Routine hormone treatments are administered as necessary to bring mares into heat (i.e., prostaglandin) and to hasten ovulation (i.e., human chorionic gonadotropin, hCG; or gonadotropin releasing hormone, deslorelin). In addition, uterine treatments (i.e., antibiotic therapy and/or uterine lavage) are performed as deemed necessary based on transrectal ultrasonography examinations (i.e., presence of free intrauterine fluid), or other diagnostic techniques (i.e., uterine culture). Your mare may also be managed for a set fee of $300 for up to two consecutive heat cycles (which will include teasing, all ultrasounds and artificial insemination). Mares enrolled in this program must begin with a clean culture.

Stallion Breeding Services
The Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Diamond C Stables offers a full range of commercial stallion breeding services. For more complete details, please contact Branden Culver.
Stallion breeding services are designed to allow owners to use their stallion’s semen in a fresh or cooled transported semen breeding program. Stallion breeding services are provided on an outpatient (trailer-in) or inpatient basis (stallions housed at Diamond C Stables). All breeding services are charged on a pre-procedure basis. The stallion owner is responsible for paying applicable fees at the time services are rendered. Semen collection is performed at the laboratory using routine techniques. After semen is collected, it is immediately evaluated and processed for fresh or cooled-transported use. The initial semen evaluation includes determination of:
1) gel-free volume
2) percent sperm motility (total and progressive)
3) sperm concentration.
If the semen is to be used for fresh insemination, the appropriate volume of raw semen is mixed with semen extender so that each insemination dose contains at least 500 million progressively motile sperm cells. If the semen is to be used for shipped-cooled insemination, the appropriate volume of raw semen is mixed with semen extender so that each insemination dose contains at least one billion progressively motile sperm cells. After processing, the semen is packaged into an appropriate shipping/cooling container and sent to the mare owner. Cooled-transported semen is generally shipped to the mare owner using FedEx; the stallion owner is responsible for paying shipping charges. If semen is shipped for same day delivery using commercial airlines (i.e., counter-to-counter), the stallion owner is responsible for transporting the semen from Diamond C Stables to the airport, and paying appropriate fees at the airport.
Breeding Soundness Exam (BSE) – $400.00
Semen collection, evaluation, and processing for fresh insemination – $150.00
Semen collection, evaluation, and cooling for shipping over night – $300.00 (counter to counter $400.00)
